Who we are
PCEA Kitengela Parish belongs to the Presbyterian Church of East Africa. We are listed under Kajiado Presbytery. The parish minister listed by PCEA is Rev. John K. Muhinyia.
Kitengela Parish has six congregations. The Kirk Session is the court for the whole parish. Each congregation has a Local Church Committee (LCC) that runs local worship, groups and money, and reports to the Kirk Session.
The parish office is at PCEA Kitengela Township Church, Nairobi-Namanga Road. Write to info@pceakitengela.or.ke.
How we began
The work started in November 2001, when sixteen members moved from PCEA Noonkopir (then under Kajiado Outreach, Ngong Hills Presbytery). Nairobi Presbytery asked Athi River Church, which already had a district in Kitengela, to take them in.
On 16 December 2001 Rev. Nina inaugurated PCEA Kitengela Church at St. Lilianna Preparatory School as a congregation of Athi River Outreach. Elder Arthur Ngiritta was the first LCC chairman. The church later bought land on the present Township site. On 23 June 2002 the congregation moved there, led by Rev. Zachary Gioko.
Athi River Outreach became a parish on 23 September 2007. Growth led to a split on 24 October 2010. That is when PCEA Kitengela Parish was formed. It sat in Nairobi Central Presbytery until 26 October 2014, when it was transferred to Kajiado Presbytery. The present Township sanctuary was dedicated the same day by Rev. Thegu Mutahi, then Deputy Secretary General.
Younger congregations followed, among them Neema and Bethel in 2016, and Stoni Athi, whose sanctuary was dedicated in February 2017.
How the parish works
PCEA Practice and Procedure requires a Kirk Session in every parish, and an LCC in every congregation. In Kitengela that means:
- Kirk Session - minister (Moderator), Session Clerk, and elders from the congregations. Membership, discipline, shared ministry and the parish budget sit here.
- Local Church Committee - each congregation elects its own. The LCC chair and treasurer usually sit on the Parish Finance Committee.
- Parish Finance Committee - oversees money across the Kirk Session, all six LCCs, and parish-level groups. It meets at Township.
- Districts - elders shepherd members by district. Start with your congregation’s elder. Come to the parish office when the matter is Kirk Session business.
Shared parish costs (ministry stipend, office, common work) are funded by the congregations together through the Maintenance of the Ministry Fund.
